Sweden Unveils World’s Largest Timber Construction Project: Stockholm Wood City

Date:

Sweden is taking the lead in modern timber construction with the announcement of Stockholm Wood City, the world’s largest wooden construction project. Set to become a vibrant neighborhood in the heart of the Swedish capital, Stockholm Wood City will feature 2,000 homes, along with office and retail spaces, all constructed primarily from sustainable timber.

Stockholm Wood City is more than just a housing development—it is a showcase of sustainable architecture and urban development. The project covers an extensive area of 250,000 square meters, making it the largest known wooden construction project globally.

In line with its commitment to sustainability, Stockholm Wood City will incorporate environmentally friendly features. The rooftops will be equipped with solar panels to reduce the reliance on the power grid. Green spaces will also be integrated on the rooftops and terraces, adding to the overall eco-friendly design.

Addressing concerns about fire safety, the project utilizes modern engineered timber, such as cross-laminated timber and glued laminated timber. Extensive studies have shown that these materials perform exceptionally well in fire conditions.

Construction Timeline and Design Collaboration

Construction of Stockholm Wood City is slated to commence in 2025, with the first buildings expected to be completed by 2027. While the developers, Atrium Ljungberg, have not yet revealed the design team, sources indicate a collaboration between renowned architectural firms White Arkitekter and Henning Larsen Architects.

Stockholm Wood City represents a significant step towards sustainable urban development. By leveraging timber construction and incorporating green technologies, the project aims to reduce the carbon footprint associated with the built environment. With its innovative design and commitment to sustainability, Stockholm Wood City sets a new standard for environmentally conscious architecture and serves as a model for future urban developments.

As the world’s largest wooden construction project, Stockholm Wood City is poised to inspire other cities and countries to embrace timber as a viable and sustainable building material. With its combination of modern design, fire safety considerations, and eco-friendly features, Stockholm Wood City showcases the immense potential of timber construction in creating greener and more livable urban spaces.
