Empowering Communities: 44 Projects Implemented in Upper West Region in Ghana

Date:

The Northern Development Authority (NDA) has successfully completed and inaugurated 44 projects in the Upper West Region as part of its Infrastructure for Poverty Eradication Programme (IPEP). These projects, funded under the Constituency Initiatives, include the provision of potable water facilities, rural electrification systems, health centers, and educational infrastructure, among others.

During his maiden tour of the region, Mr. Sulley Sambian, Chief Executive Officer of the NDA, inaugurated several projects to benefit the local communities. One such project was the GH¢450,000 well-furnished three-classroom block at the Zaghe M/A Primary School in the Jirapa Municipality. This facility also includes an office, a store, and a staff common room. Mr. Sambian encouraged the community members to take ownership of the project and ensure regular maintenance to maximize its lifespan and benefit the children in the communities.

Empowering Teachers with Adequate Housing

Recognizing the challenges faced by teachers in rural areas, the NDA inaugurated two unit semi-detached teacher’s quarters in Goli, Nadowli-Kaleo District, at a cost of GH¢303,000. These quarters aim to provide decent accommodation for teachers, reducing the time they spend on their daily commute and enabling them to focus on effective and quality teaching. Mr. Sambian emphasized the importance of community members maintaining the buildings to motivate teachers to work in rural schools and contribute to the education of the children.

In addition to educational projects, the NDA also has implemented a rural electrification project in Kaleo-Booduori, Nadowli-Kaleo District. This project has brought electricity to a community that previously had no access to it. Mr. Sambian encouraged the residents to use the electricity judiciously and emphasized its potential to increase incomes and improve livelihoods.

Positive Impact on the Community

Launch of these projects have brought numerous benefits to the Upper West Region. Community members now have access to essential amenities such as clean water, electricity, improved educational facilities, and better housing for teachers.

The NDA remains committed to its goals of eradicating poverty and promoting development in the Northern region. Through its continued efforts and collaboration with local communities, the authority strives to implement impactful projects that positively transform the lives of the people in the Upper West Region and beyond. These developments are expected to enhance the overall quality of life and provide opportunities for economic growth and improved livelihoods.
