Disney announces live-action remake of Moana, with The Rock returning

Date:

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is teaming up with Disney to bring the story of Moana to the big screen once again. The new film will be a live-action remake of the hit 2016 animated film and will be produced by Flynn Picture Co. Auli‘i Cravalho, the voice of Moana in the original film, will also serve as one of the executive producers of the project.

Honoring his culture

Johnson, who played the demigod Maui in the animated film, spoke of his deep connection to the story and the Polynesian culture. “This story is my culture, and this story is emblematic of our people’s grace and warrior strength,” he said in a statement. He also spoke of his late grandfather, Samoan professional wrestler Peter Maivia, who inspired his portrayal of Maui. “I wear this culture proudly on my skin and in my soul, and this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reunite with Maui is one that runs very deep for me,” Johnson added.

Early development stage

The live-action remake is still in its early development stage, according to Johnson, who made the announcement in a pre-recorded message from Hawaii as part of the shareholder meeting. He also expressed his gratitude and excitement for the opportunity to bring Moana’s story to life once again. “Humbled to say we’re bringing #MOANA’s beautiful story to the live-action big screen! #MAUI changed my life (miss you grandpa) and I’m honored to partner with @DisneyStudios to tell our story thru the realm of music & dance, which at the core is who we are as Polynesian people,” he tweeted.

A massive hit film

The original Moana film was a massive hit, earning over $680 million at the box office. The film follows the journey of a young Polynesian girl named Moana who sets out on a voyage to save her people. Along the way, she meets Maui, a demigod who becomes her companion and helps her navigate the dangers of the ocean.

Excitement for the new film

The announcement of the live-action remake of Moana has generated a lot of excitement among fans of the original film, who are eager to see how Johnson and the rest of the team will bring the story to life in a new way. While there is still much to be revealed about the project, it is clear that Johnson is deeply invested in the story and is excited to share it with the world once again.
