The network of India’s indigenous Vande Bharat Express high-speed trains has reached a major milestone, with 164 operational services now running across the country as of November 8, 2025. This rapid expansion underscores the government’s sustained, multi-billion dollar investment in modernizing rail infrastructure and significantly upgrading the speed and quality of travel for millions of passenger segments. The Vande Bharat fleet, which combines both fully operational trains and designated service routes, is crucial for improving connectivity between major metropolitan hubs and secondary cities.
The trains, designed and manufactured entirely within India under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, are a key feature of the national strategy to modernize the rail system, which is the country’s primary mode of long-distance transport. The goal is to replace older, slower trains with these self-propelled, semi-high-speed rakes that feature advanced amenities like GPS-based passenger information systems, automatic doors, and modern air-conditioning. This focus on technological excellence helps Indian Railways compete more effectively with air travel on medium-distance routes. The continued growth of the Vande Bharat network is expected to have a significant positive impact on local economies, boosting tourism and easing logistics by providing faster, more reliable connections. Furthermore, the commitment to mass manufacturing these modern trains drives domestic job creation and strengthens India’s industrial manufacturing capabilities.
