India News: Lakme Fashion Week closed its Delhi 2026 edition on 18 October at the Taj Palace in New Delhi after six days of shows run with the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI). The week put Russian designer Sergey Sysoev on an Indian runway, returned Manish Malhotra after a long absence and handed a circular-design prize to a menswear label.
Key facts
- Lakme Fashion Week x FDCI ran from 13 to 18 October 2026 in New Delhi, presented by House of Lakmē, FDCI and Reliance Brands.
- Russian designer Sergey Sysoev showed on 15 October under an agreement between FDCI and the Russian Fashion Council.
- Menswear label Margn, founded by Saurabh Maurya, won the eighth R|Elan Circular Design Challenge and USD 16,000.
- Amit Aggarwal’s AM.IT closed the week on 18 October with a collection titled “On a Day Like Today”.
Why did a Russian designer open a new door in Delhi?
Sysoev’s slot on 15 October was billed as “FDCI X Moscow Fashion Week”, and it carried more weight than a guest appearance. The show sits inside a formal agreement between FDCI, which counts more than 400 members, and the Russian Fashion Council. Last month an FDCI designer travelled the other way and showed in Moscow.
Sysoev founded his eponymous label in 1996 and has shown on the Russian fashion week circuit since 2000. His women’s ready-to-wear leans on tailoring, knitwear and textile treatments drawn from folk art, architecture and decorative traditions. That vocabulary sits close to the Indian craft revival on show elsewhere in the week.
Alexander Shumsky, president of the Russian Fashion Council, said the exchange “provides an opportunity to bring Indian and Russian fashion closer”. FDCI chairman Sunil Sethi put it more broadly: “Fashion has the ability to create dialogue across cultures.”
For a BRICS reader, this is the more interesting thread. Trade talks between New Delhi and Moscow tend to centre on oil, fertiliser and defence. A council-to-council runway swap is small, but it is concrete, reciprocal and already in its second leg.

A prize for circular design
The R|Elan Circular Design Challenge, run by Reliance Industries with the United Nations in India, drew more than 220 applications for its eighth season. Margn took USD 16,000 and a solo show at the Mumbai edition in March 2027. Runner-up Yoshita 1967, founded by Anil Padia, received USD 5,000 and mentorship from sustainable-fashion campaigner Orsola de Castro. The jury included Stefan Priesner, UN resident coordinator in India.
One detail is unclear. ANI dates the finale to 13 October, matching the official schedule, while a FashionUnited report published on 15 October says it took place “yesterday”. We follow the schedule.
Malhotra’s return and a finale built around a work day
Manish Malhotra came back with “Luxury Prêt 2026” on 18 October. Actors Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan walked as showstoppers, both in black. The show also launched Manish Malhotra Menswear Luxe Prêt, alongside jewellery and accessories.
Amit Aggarwal closed the week hours later. His AM.IT label built the collection around four personas, from “The Clock-In” to “The Socialiser”, tracing a single day from office to evening. Actor Aneet Padda, a Lakmē ambassador, presented the collaboration on the runway.
The primetime slate also featured Tarun Tahiliani, Ashish N Soni, Namrata Joshipura, Suneet Verma and Samant Chauhan. Ladakh’s industries department staged “The Fifth Season”, a showcase of Himalayan craft.
What does the week say about Indian fashion abroad?
The programme read like a map of partnerships. Italy’s trade agency brought “Eccellenza”, France hosted the circular-design final, and Russia sent a designer. Our view: the Moscow link deserves the most attention, because it is the only one built on a reciprocal council agreement rather than a single sponsored showcase. If FDCI keeps sending designers to Moscow each season, Indian labels gain a route into a market where Western houses have pulled back.
The calendar of cultural exchange inside BRICS is filling up. Recent examples include the BRICS traditional games in Ahmedabad, and our BRICS events calendar lists what comes next.
