India Demands Moscow Release 44 Indian Nationals Serving in Russian Military

Date:

The India Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has formally urged Russia to facilitate the immediate and safe release of 44 Indian nationals who are currently serving in the Russian military. The MEA confirmed the number of citizens following reports of Indians being recruited into the Russian army as combat “helpers” or “security assistants,” with some reportedly forced into frontline roles in the war against Ukraine. This diplomatic demand highlights the complexity of India’s relationship with Russia, which is a major defense partner.

The MEA issued a strong advisory to all Indian citizens, cautioning them about the “risks” of such recruitment and urging them to “exercise extreme caution” when considering job offers from Russia, particularly those promising auxiliary roles. The advisory specifically warned that any Indian national engaging in such activity could violate national laws and face severe consequences. The government is actively using its embassy in Moscow to seek the discharge of all Indian nationals.

This issue has been a growing source of tension. India previously secured the release of ten citizens recruited by the Russian Army in June 2024, demonstrating the diplomatic leverage New Delhi holds with Moscow. The MEA stated that the issue was taken up at the “highest level” with Russian authorities, emphasizing the seriousness of the violation of trust and the need for Moscow to respect international conventions regarding foreign nationals in combat roles.
