Vodacom Group is taking a monumental step toward bridging the digital skills gap in Africa by launching the Vodacom Digital Skills Hub. This initiative aims to provide accessible, certified, and self-paced digital skills training to young people aged 18 to 35 across eight African nations. With a goal to upskill one million youths by 2027, Vodacom’s program underscores its commitment to fostering a digitally inclusive future for the continent.
Addressing Africa’s Challenges Through Digital Empowerment
Vodacom Group CEO, Shameel Joosub, highlighted the importance of this initiative:
“The African continent is plagued with high levels of unemployment, gender inequality, income disparity, and limited access to education and essential services. These challenges drive our purpose to connect for a better future by leveraging digital technologies to drive inclusion and empower communities.”
Bridging the Digital Skills Gap
The Vodacom Digital Skills Hub, in collaboration with technology leaders like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft, and Skillsoft, will provide high-quality e-learning opportunities. Participants can access industry-certified programs tailored to equip them with essential digital expertise. By focusing on eight countries—Tanzania, South Africa, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Lesotho, Egypt, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Kenya—this initiative seeks to nurture Africa’s next generation of digital innovators.
Empowering the Next Generation of Innovators
Vivienne Penessis, Director of Human Resources at Vodacom Tanzania, emphasized the transformative potential of this program:
“Our main aim is to address the digital skills shortage on the continent, nurture young talent, and advance Africa’s digital economy. This initiative is particularly designed to inspire girls and young people to consider careers in STEM.”
