Nigeria to End Fuel Scarcity as NNPC Begins Distribution of Petroleum Products from Port Harcourt Refinery

Date:

he Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Ltd. has taken a significant step towards addressing fuel scarcity in the country by commencing the truck-out of petroleum products from the Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC). This marks a critical milestone in Nigeria’s journey toward energy independence and economic growth.

On Tuesday, NNPC officially re-streamed the PHRC, beginning crude oil processing and the distribution of key petroleum products, including Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), and Household Kerosene (HHK). Other products are expected to follow shortly.

A Monumental Achievement for Nigeria

The Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of NNPC, Mele Kyari, expressed his pride in this monumental achievement during a ceremony held to mark the commencement of the refinery’s operations. According to Kyari, this development symbolizes a new era of energy security and economic growth for Nigeria.

Kyari extended heartfelt gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unwavering support and determination to see the refinery rehabilitation project through to completion. He also appreciated the NNPC Board of Directors, staff, and contractors for their dedication and hard work, which made the refinery’s streaming possible despite significant challenges.

Regulatory Support and Rehabilitation Progress

The Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream & Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Mr. Farouk Ahmed, congratulated NNPC for this milestone achievement. He pledged his agency’s ongoing support to ensure the successful rehabilitation of other refineries across the country.

The PHRC rehabilitation project, an Engineering, Procurement, Construction, Installation & Commissioning (EPCIC) initiative, aims to restore the refinery to full operational capacity. With over 16 million manhours completed and zero Loss Time Injury (LTI), the project sets a high standard for safety and efficiency in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.

A Bright Future for Nigeria’s Energy Sector

The commencement of product distribution from the PHRC signals hope for a stable supply of petroleum products, reduced dependency on imports, and a positive impact on Nigeria’s economy. Nigerians eagerly anticipate the rehabilitation of other refineries as NNPC continues its commitment to ensuring energy security.
