Antonio Tajani Condemns Rocket Attack on UNIFIL Base Injuring Four Italian Soldiers

Date:

The ongoing tensions in southern Lebanon have escalated, with a rocket attack striking the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) base in Shama, injuring four Italian soldiers. The attack, allegedly carried out by Hezbollah or its affiliates, has sparked widespread condemnation.

UNIFIL Base Under Attack

The Shama base, a pivotal location for UN peacekeeping forces, was struck by two 122mm rockets. The explosions damaged areas where blue helmets had sought refuge. The injuries sustained by the Italian soldiers were reportedly minor, but the incident has raised alarms about the safety of peacekeepers in the volatile region.

Italian Leaders Demand Accountability

Antonio Tajani, Italy’s Foreign Minister, denounced the attack during a press briefing in Turin. He stated:
“It is unacceptable what is happening. Just as we asked Israel to exercise utmost caution to prevent harm to our base, we are making the same firm demand to Hezbollah. Our military must not be touched.”

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also voiced her condemnation, labeling the attack as “unacceptable” and urging all parties involved to ensure the safety of UNIFIL forces. She further called for swift identification and prosecution of those responsible.

UNIFIL’s Role in a War-Torn Region

UNIFIL has faced increasing challenges since Israel launched its ground invasion into Lebanon on October 1. Several UNIFIL posts have been hit amid the escalating conflict, leaving peacekeepers in constant danger.

The mission’s spokesperson, Andrea Tenenti, confirmed that heavy clashes between Israeli forces and Hezbollah fighters were ongoing in areas near Naqoura and Chamaa.

Broader Implications of the Conflict

The attack on the UNIFIL base is part of a larger narrative of violence in the region. Since the war began in Gaza over a year ago, the conflict has spilled over into southern Lebanon. Hezbollah’s cross-border attacks into Israel have led to intensified retaliations, displacing tens of thousands on both sides of the border.

International Calls for Peace and Accountability

The international community continues to urge restraint, emphasizing the need for all parties to adhere to international law and prioritize the safety of civilians and peacekeeping forces.

This attack serves as a grim reminder of the dangers faced by peacekeepers stationed in conflict zones and the urgency of diplomatic solutions to prevent further escalation.
