UN Chinese Language Day celebrated in Kenya

Date:

The Confucius Institute at the University of Nairobi in Kenya hosted an open interactive event on Tuesday to commemorate the United Nations Chinese Language Day, which occurs on Thursday.

With over 40 guests, the event included activities such as Chinese calligraphy writing, paper-cutting crafts, and quizzes regarding Chinese popular music and Chinese culture.

“It’s not just a Chinese-featured event, it can bridge the communication gaps and popularize multilingualism and cultural diversity,” said Daniel Gichunji Musyoka, a volunteer at the event, adding that the experience of writing Chinese characters and paper-cutting Chinese rabbits was terrific and educational.

Hansnick Omondi Otieno, a tourist management major, who has spent two years studying Chinese at the Confucius Institute said: “Although I thought I knew everything there was to know about China, this illuminating event made me realize that there are still tons of sophisticated things and incredibly fascinating treasures waiting for us to discover.”

“For thousands of years, the Chinese language has existed. The aim of this celebration is to educate our students on the Chinese language and to teach people all over the world about the benefits of learning the Chinese language,” said Maureen Ooko, a local teacher who teaches the Chinese language.

The event lasted more than three hours.
