Kenya seeks to enhance internet connectivity

Date:

Kenya’s state-owned telecom institutions have inked an agreement to provide last-mile fibre optic cable access across the country’s 19 unserved and underserved areas.

The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) and the Information and Communication Technology Authority (ICTA) announced a technical cooperation agreement under which the CA, the industry regulator, will fund fibre deployment in the chosen counties through the Universal Service Fund (USF).

“What we are doing today is phenomenal and will greatly transform the country in the years to come,” CA Director General Ezra Chiloba said in a statement issued in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi on Tuesday.

According to the two institutions, the action is in accordance with USF’s goal of assisting the implementation of infrastructure and communications services in unserved and underserved areas in Kenya.

According to the CA, the project supports the Government’s Digital Transformation Agenda by deploying 100,000 kilometres of fibre as part of efforts to improve internet access across the country.

The relationship with the CA, according to ICTA Chief Executive Officer Stanley Kamanguya, would go a long way toward achieving the digital transformation objective.

The project will be implemented over a three-year period, with the latest step coming after the two institutions signed a Memorandum of Understanding in December 2022.
