The United Arab Emirates has announced a new federal decree law on traffic regulations, set to take effect on March 29, 2025.
The new legislation lowers the minimum age to obtain a driving licence for cars and motorcycles, making the UAE the first country in the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) region to reduce its age limit.
Previously, the minimum age to obtain a driving licence in the UAE was 18 for cars and 17 for motorcycles. Under the new rules, the legal age for both vehicles will be standardized, although the exact age has not been specified.
This change aims to streamline the process and ensure consistency in the requirements for different vehicle types.
The UAE’s move distinguishes it from neighbouring GCC countries, which maintain varying age limits for different types of vehicles. In Oman and Bahrain, the minimum legal age for a driving licence remains at 18.
Saudi Arabia has a tiered system, allowing individuals as young as 16 to get a motorcycle licence, 18 for cars, and 17 for a temporary driving permit.
In Qatar, the legal age is 18 for light motor vehicles and 21 for heavy vehicles, while Kuwait sets different age limits based on nationality: 18 for Kuwaiti citizens and 21 for expatriates.
Globally, minimum age requirements for driving licences generally range from 15 to 18 years, with a few countries allowing younger individuals, as young as 14, to obtain a licence under supervision.
The UAE’s decision to adjust the minimum age aligns it with these international practices while reinforcing its position as a regional leader in regulatory innovation.
The new traffic law reflects the UAE’s commitment to updating regulations in line with global standards, enhancing road safety, and ensuring a more inclusive driving environment for residents and citizens alike.
