Tom Saintfiet Resigns as Gambia Coach Following Disappointing Africa Cup of Nations Exit

Date:

Tom Saintfiet has officially resigned as the coach of the Gambia national football team, following their dramatic exit from the Africa Cup of Nations on Tuesday.

The 50-year-old Belgian tactician made the announcement after the Scorpions’ late defeat (3-2) against Cameroon in their final Group C match, securing them the last spot in the group without any points, despite the considerable enthusiasm they generated throughout the tournament.

“Thank you for your service,” the Gambia Football Federation said on to our nation, by qualifying for two consecutive CANs, which was no coincidence. We wish him good luck.”

Saintfiet, a seasoned coach with extensive experience guiding various African national teams, took the helm of the Gambia team in 2018.

His tenure reached its pinnacle in 2021 when he successfully led the small West African country to its first-ever qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Despite being considered underdogs, the team’s remarkable journey saw them reach the quarter-finals of the prestigious tournament.

However, the recent performance in the current edition of the Africa Cup of Nations has been less than stellar, culminating in the decision of the 50-year-old coach to resign.

The late defeat against Cameroon proved to be the final blow, leaving the Gambia team at the bottom of Group C without a single point.

This outcome comes as a disappointment to fans who had high hopes for a repeat of the team’s remarkable run in the previous edition.

Saintfiet’s departure marks the end of an era for Gambian football, and the search for a new coach to lead the national team is now underway.

As fans reflect on the highs and lows of Saintfiet’s tenure, the focus shifts to the future and the potential for a fresh start under new leadership.
