AFCON 2023: Mauritania eliminates 2019 AFCON champions Algeria

Date:

In a surprising turn of events at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Algeria faced an unexpected early exit from the tournament after a shocking defeat against Mauritania.

The underdog team, the Mourabitounes, created history by securing a spot in the round of 16 for the first time in their footballing journey.

Algeria’s disappointment in the first round of AFCON 2024 can be likened to the triumph achieved by Mauritania.

The Fennecs, who were the reigning African champions from 2019, faced a significant setback after being beaten 1-0 by Mauritania at the Bouaké stadium.

For the first time in their history, the Mauritanians secured a place in the eighth final of the competition. This remarkable achievement marks a historic moment for Mauritania’s football legacy, as they overcame their neighbour and perennial opponent to reach the round of 16.

Algeria’s Riyad Mahrez-led generation, under the coaching of Djamel Belmadi, faced another misstep in their football journey.

Despite needing only a draw to advance to the round of 16, the Fennecs fell short in a match where they appeared both uncoordinated and feverish.

This setback follows Algeria’s previous disappointment in AFCON 2022, where they finished last in their group. Additionally, the Fennecs faced failure in the World Cup play-offs against Cameroon, further highlighting their recent challenges on the international stage.

On the flip side, Mauritania’s historic feat was not only in reaching the round of 16 but also in overcoming a historical trend of losses against their neighboring teams.

The victory against Algeria is a testament to their determination and progress in the world of African football.
