Teenage Animator, Son of Cameroonian immigrants, Contributes to “Spider-Man” Film

Date:

Preston Mutanga, a 14-year-old aspiring animator, gained widespread attention when he shared a video of his LEGO-style recreation of the trailer for “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” online. The video quickly went viral, catching the eye of the movie’s writers and producers, Chris Lord and Phil Miller.

Recognizing Exceptional Talent

Lord and Miller were astounded by the sophistication and creativity displayed in Mutanga’s two-minute video. Despite his young age and lack of professional experience, the quality of his work impressed even the most renowned animators in the industry.

When the time came to produce the latest “Spider-Man” film, the filmmakers approached Mutanga with an exciting opportunity to contribute to the movie. However, Mutanga’s parents initially doubted the offer’s authenticity. It wasn’t until they met Patrick O’Keefe, the film’s production designer, who confirmed the contract with Sony Pictures Animation, that they realized the opportunity was real.

Supportive Parents and Determination

Despite their initial skepticism, Mutanga’s parents, Theodore and Gisele, rallied behind their son’s passion and dreams. His father, a medical physicist, went the extra mile to support him, providing a new computer and a state-of-the-art graphics card for his animation work.

The film, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” currently dominates the box office, receiving high acclaim from critics and audiences alike, with a 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Mutanga expresses his deep admiration for the original movie and the opportunity to collaborate with the talented individuals. He aspires to pursue a full-time career in animation, having honed his skills by creating short computer-generated LEGO videos since a young age.

Inspiring Creativity and Determination

Preston Mutanga’s success serves as an inspiration to young artists and aspiring animators worldwide. His determination, creativity, and ability to captivate audiences at such a young age highlight the limitless possibilities that lie ahead in the world of animation. With his talent and drive, Mutanga is undoubtedly a rising star in the industry, destined for a bright future in his chosen field.
