Tanzania Triumphs in the 2nd Pan-African STEM Competition

Date:

The 2nd Pan-African STEM Competition, hosted by Young Engineers Tanzania in Dar es Salaam, concluded with Tanzania emerging as the overall winner in the junior category. This prestigious event, which took place over the weekend, attracted over 200 students from five African nations—Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, and South Africa—and served as a platform for young engineers to showcase their creativity and problem-solving skills in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

Inspiring the Next Generation of Engineers and Innovators

The competition aimed to inspire children aged 6–14 by challenging them to design innovative, sustainable solutions to one of the world’s most pressing issues: urbanization. Participants, guided by the theme “Design Sustainable Cities with Integrated Transportation Systems to Solve Urbanization Challenges”, worked diligently to create projects that could help address the challenges associated with rapid urban growth. This theme aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and Goal 13 (Climate Action).

After completing their assignments at the Aga Khan Primary School in Dar es Salaam, Tanzanian students were declared the overall winners in the junior category, with Kenya securing the first runner-up position. In the senior category, Uganda took the top spot, while Tanzania achieved first runner-up.

Recognition for Excellence in Teamwork and Innovation

The competition featured awards in several categories, including Best Teamwork, Most Innovative, Most Creative, and Overall Winner. The Tanzanian team, Twigas IST, was recognized not only for their excellence in teamwork but also for their outstanding presentations and innovation. Their efforts earned them a victory in these categories, while their creativity secured them the first runner-up position in the creativity category, just behind Kenya’s Incredibles HBS team.

Benazir Kurji, franchise owner and director of Young Engineers Tanzania, expressed the significance of the competition. “The Pan-African STEM Competition provides a platform for young minds across the continent to collaborate, innovate, and share ideas in the fields of robotics, engineering, and STEM education. We are excited to host this competition in Tanzania and look forward to bringing together children from different cultures to learn from each other, enhance their skills, and prepare for the careers of the future.”

A Focus on Sustainable Solutions for Future Cities

The competition’s theme encouraged participants to think critically about designing cities that are not only sustainable but also resilient to the challenges of rapid urbanization. By working with specialized Young Engineers Master Builders Kits, which included over 300 motorized LEGO pieces, students applied engineering principles, mechanics, physics, and mathematics in their projects. These kits allowed the children to build prototypes of solutions for urbanization challenges, utilizing both creativity and teamwork to address complex real-world problems.

Continued Success of Young Engineers Tanzania

This year’s event is a continuation of Tanzania’s success in the Pan-African STEM competition. Last year, Tanzania also emerged as the winner in the inaugural competition held in Nairobi, Kenya. With Tanzania serving as the host country for 2024, it has solidified its role as a leader in STEM education in Africa.

Young Engineers, a global organization operating in over 60 countries since its founding in 2008, offers after-school programs that teach critical 21st-century skills, including creativity, critical thinking, teamwork, and spatial cognition. In Tanzania, the organization partners with schools to offer a wide variety of STEM activities, helping to inspire the next generation of engineers, scientists, and innovators.

Conclusion

The 2nd Pan-African STEM Competition not only showcased the immense talent and potential of African youth but also underscored the importance of STEM education in addressing global challenges. By empowering the next generation of innovators, Tanzania and its fellow competitors are contributing to the development of sustainable cities and communities. This event is a testament to the growing impact of STEM education in Africa and the critical role it will play in shaping the continent’s future.
