Gov’t to Acquire Land in Busia, Siaya, and Murang’a for Major Infrastructure Projects

Date:

The government of Kenya has announced plans to acquire parcels of land in Murang’a, Siaya, and Busia counties for significant development projects aimed at improving infrastructure and mitigating flood risks.

Land Acquisition for Key Projects

In Murang’a County, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) is set to acquire land for upgrading the Kangema-Gacharage (B23) Road. This upgrade will involve corrections and additions to nine parcels of land, varying in size, under the National Land Commission’s oversight.

For Siaya and Busia counties, the Ministry of Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation will oversee the acquisition of land as part of the Lower Nzoia Irrigation and Flood Mitigation Development Project, Phase One. The project will involve the deletion of one parcel, corrections to 53 parcels, and the acquisition of 51 new parcels.

Legal Framework and Notice

The process is guided by the Land Act, 2012, Part VIII, and government notices issued in 2013 and 2016. Gershom Otachi, Chairman of the National Land Commission, confirmed the acquisitions through a Gazette Notice dated Friday, November 25.

Affected landowners are advised to inspect plans at Ardhi House or the respective NLC County offices in Murang’a, Busia, and Siaya.

Inquiry and Compensation Process

The government will hold inquiries between December 11 and December 16 at Nyadorera Office Site Facility, NIB Bunyala Irrigation Scheme Office Facility, Uranga Chief’s Camp, and Nduru Open Air Market.

Landowners must provide:

  • A written claim for compensation
  • A copy of their identity card (ID)
  • Personal Identification Number (PIN)
  • Land ownership documents
  • Bank account details

This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to infrastructure and agricultural development, promising long-term benefits for the affected regions.
