Tanzania to host African Food Systems Forum 2023

Date:

The Ministry of Agriculture in Tanzania recently held a working session to discuss transforming the country’s agrifood systems. The meeting, which included experts from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations representatives, and other partners, was part of a series of national and local dialogues on food systems that began in 2021. The discussions centered on strategic action pathways to build sustainable food systems and efficient engagement of the private sector.

National Roadmap for Sustainable and Equitable Food Systems

The National Roadmap for transforming agrifood systems in Tanzania was developed through the support of FAO and other UN agencies and partners. The roadmap includes the preparation of an action plan and monitoring and evaluation framework for the implementation of the outcomes of the dialogues. During the meeting, the participants discussed the Implementation and Sustainability Plan, which will be developed together with FAO, UN, and other partners to ensure that Tanzania’s transformation of food systems development moves forward effectively. The plan will also include a monitoring and evaluation framework.

African Food Systems Forum to be held in Tanzania

Tanzania is set to host African Food Systems Forum in September 2023. The decision to host the forum has given impetus to efforts to transform agrifood systems through sustainable development. The Forum is expected to be a premier platform for advancing the agriculture and food systems agenda on the continent, from food security to agri-food investments. The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Gerald Mweli, praised the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, for her active participation in the Dakar Summit earlier this year, which set a precedent for changing the narrative of food systems transformation and investment in Tanzania.

“I would like to express my greatest compliments to Tanzania for preparing to host Africa’s Food System Forum 2023. This will be an imperative and unique opportunity to mobolise the country and all of Africa on the transformation change needed in our food systems,” said FAO Country Representative, Dr. Nyabenyi Tipo.
