Saudi Arabia’s Leisure Tourism Soars with 17.5 Million Visitors in 2024

Date:

Saudi Arabia’s leisure tourism sector is reaching unprecedented heights, welcoming 17.5 million international visitors in 2024—a staggering 656 percent increase since 2019. This remarkable growth highlights the Kingdom’s commitment to transforming its tourism landscape as part of Vision 2030, which aims to position Saudi Arabia as a global tourism hub.

Rapid Growth Driven by Vision 2030

The introduction of Saudi Arabia’s first tourism visa in 2019 marked a turning point for the nation’s travel industry. By 2023, the Kingdom had already achieved its ambitious Vision 2030 goal of 100 million annual visitors, seven years ahead of schedule.

Between January and July 2024 alone, 4.2 million tourists visited Saudi Arabia for entertainment and leisure—a 25 percent increase from the same period in 2023. The total number of international tourists during this period reflects a 10 percent rise from 2023 and an impressive 73 percent growth compared to 2019.

The UN World Tourism Barometer also recognized Saudi Arabia as the fastest-growing G20 nation in terms of international arrivals and tourism revenues, solidifying its status as a leading global travel destination.

Key Attractions and Initiatives

Saudi Arabia’s tourism growth is fueled by a blend of world-class attractions and cultural heritage projects:

  • Diriyah Gate Project: A historical redevelopment initiative offering luxury accommodations and rich cultural experiences.
  • Red Sea Resorts: High-end, sustainable resorts along the stunning Red Sea coastline.
  • Cultural Tourism: Sites like AlUla and the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Cultural Heritage Program celebrate Saudi Arabia’s historical and cultural richness.
  • Integrated Tourism Destinations: Investments in diverse tourism experiences ensure something for every traveler.

These initiatives aim to provide immersive and memorable experiences, making Saudi Arabia a must-visit destination for global tourists.

A Boon for Employment

The tourism boom is not just transforming the Kingdom’s global reputation—it’s also reshaping its workforce. By 2030, the sector is projected to create 1.2 million jobs, with a focus on employing Saudi nationals in areas like hospitality, tour operations, and heritage preservation.

Currently, the sector employs around 900,000 Saudi citizens, making it one of the largest sources of local employment. The National Transformation Program ensures that this trend continues, empowering the local workforce and contributing to economic diversification.

Conclusion

Saudi Arabia’s remarkable tourism growth underscores its dedication to preserving cultural heritage while embracing innovation. As the Kingdom welcomes more visitors and expands its offerings, it is well on its way to becoming one of the world’s premier travel destinations.
