An ecstatic atmosphere surrounded the Nigerian football community as Edo Queens stunned defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns with a 2-1 victory on Saturday night, securing their place in the semi-finals of the prestigious CAF Women’s Champions League in Morocco.
Edo Queens, the reigning Nigerian champions, have proven their mettle, winning the WAFU B Women’s Champions League earlier this year in Côte d’Ivoire and now continuing their remarkable run in the continental championship.
NFF President Gusau Commends Edo Queens
Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), lauded the team’s resilience and determination:
“The NFF and the Nigerian football family are very proud of Edo Queens’ accomplishments. From winning the WAFU B title to reaching the CAF WCL semi-finals, they have shown the true Nigerian spirit of ambition and tenacity. This victory over the defending champions is a testament to their hard work and potential to claim the ultimate title.”
A Game-Changing Performance
The match against Mamelodi Sundowns was nothing short of dramatic. Sundowns, who have consistently reached the finals since the competition’s inception in 2021, opened the scoring in the 24th minute through Melinda Kgadiete. They maintained their lead until the 90th minute, but Edo Queens refused to back down.
Five minutes into added time, Emem Essien capitalized on a goalkeeping error to level the match. Shortly after, Mary Mamudu sealed the victory with a stunning finish into the roof of the net, assisted by Super Falcons forward Goodness Osigwe. This historic win placed Edo Queens at the top of Group B, sending the defending champions home.
