Saudi Arabia Begins Construction of Monumental ‘Mukaab’ Cube in Riyadh

Date:

Saudi Arabia has begun constructing the Mukaab, a giant gold cube in the heart of its capital Riyadh.

Measuring an astonishing 400 meters in height, width, and length, the Mukaab is set to become one of the world’s largest buildings, marking an iconic development in the capital city.

The Mukaab is part of the ambitious New Murabba project, a transformative 19-square-kilometre development led by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Positioned as a future “crown jewel” for Riyadh, the Mukaab’s projected cost stands at a staggering $50 billion, housing an estimated 100,000 residential units, retail spaces, hotels, offices, and entertainment venues within its expansive interior.

Inspired by the architecture of Saudi Arabia region of Najd, the Mukaab blends modern innovation with traditional design, a decision meant to reflect Saudi cultural pride.

Although its cubic shape has drawn comparisons to Mecca’s Kaaba, Saudi officials clarified that the Mukaab is not intended as an imitation but rather a tribute to regional heritage and culture.

This megastructure is just one component of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, an initiative spearheaded by the Crown Prince to diversify the nation’s economy and redefine its global image.

New Murabba represents one of several visionary projects planned for the kingdom, including a linear city, a floating eight-sided city, and a slow resort with a vertical village design.

In line with this transformation, Saudi Arabia will host the 2034 FIFA World Cup, featuring architectural marvels like a cliff-edge stadium and another set 350 meters high within the proposed straight-line city.

The first phase of the New Murabba project, which includes the Mukaab, is expected to be completed by 2030.

This visionary cube stands as a symbol of Saudi Arabia’s commitment to redefining urban architecture and positioning itself as a centre of innovation on the global stage.
