Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov Criticizes the West’s “Colonial” Approach to Global Relations

Date:

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused Western nations of maintaining a “colonial” mindset, arguing that they continue to benefit at the expense of others.

Lavrov’s comments were made during a documentary celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO).

Lavrov asserted that the West has not moved towards equitable international relations.

Instead, he claimed, it employs strategies that hinder the technological progress of other nations.

“After five centuries of domination by seizing foreign lands, destroying indigenous populations throughout North America, Africa, and other parts of the world, the West has become accustomed to living off colonial approaches,” Lavrov said.

He contrasted this historical dominance with what he described as a global shift toward a more balanced, multipolar world order.

According to Lavrov, this new direction upholds the United Nations Charter’s principle of sovereign equality and non-interference, aiming for a fairer distribution of power and interests rather than the one-sided dominance of the past.

Lavrov’s remarks underscore ongoing tensions between Russia and Western nations, particularly over differing visions of global governance and power dynamics.

His comments come amid a broader context of geopolitical friction and debates about the future of international cooperation.

BRICS Summit is ongoing with a host of leaders including the the UN secretary-general which signals universal deplomarcy.
