Premier Group Thrives Amid South Africa’s Challenges

Date:

The Premier Group, one of South Africa’s oldest and most prominent food and consumer goods companies, is celebrating its 200th anniversary with remarkable growth. Known for iconic brands such as Blue Ribbon, Snowflake, and Manhattan Sweets, Premier has continued to expand its footprint, even amid South Africa’s economic challenges.

A Stellar Financial Performance

Since listing on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) last year, Premier’s shares have soared by more than 80% in the past six months. The group’s latest financial results are equally impressive:

  • Revenue grew by 3.7% to R9.7 billion, supported by robust growth across Millbake, groceries, and international divisions.
  • Operating profit increased by 17.3% to R945 million.
  • Operating margin improved by 110 basis points to 9.7%.

Strategic Investments Driving Growth

Premier continues to strengthen its position in the market with significant investments and acquisitions:

  • Bakery Upgrades: A R700 million upgrade to its Aeroton bakery is set to be completed in early 2026, enhancing production efficiency.
  • Diversifying into Rice: The group acquired a 30% stake in Goldkeys International for R313 million, marking its entry into the rice market. This move supports its strategy to meet consumer demand for affordable staple foods like maize, bread, and rice.
  • Expanding Pasta Production: Premier’s newly reconstructed pasta factory in Mozambique has enabled the introduction of the Sunblest pasta line in select South African markets.
  • New Product Launches: The collaboration with Bevco has led to the launch of SuperC Energy Drink, while upgrades to its chocolate and liquorice facilities are positioning Premier to produce more Woolworths products locally.

CEO Kobus Gertenbach on Premier’s Vision

“We’re investing across all areas of our business,” said CEO Kobus Gertenbach. “This year, we’re spending over R700 million, and we’ll repeat that in the next financial year. Our aim is to support local manufacturing, diversify our product range, and ensure sustainable growth.”

By continuously innovating and diversifying, Premier Group is not just weathering South Africa’s economic storms but thriving as a leader in the food industry.
