PM Modi and Abiy Ahmed Affirm Bilateral Ties Anchored in Development Cooperation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali on the sidelines of the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa. The meeting, held on Saturday, November 22, 2025, reaffirmed the long-standing friendly relationship between the two countries, with PM Modi stating that the partnership is “rooted in history and strengthened by developmental cooperation.” This diplomatic interaction highlights the continuity of India’s engagement with Ethiopia, which is one of Africa’s largest economies and a key partner in capacity-building programs.

The two leaders discussed concrete steps to keep boosting ties in several key, future-focused sectors. These prioritized areas of collaboration include technology, skilling and education, and trade and investment. India has historically provided extensive support to Ethiopia through Lines of Credit covering infrastructure projects like power transmission, rural electrification, and the sugar industry. Indian companies are also major investors in Ethiopian sectors such as manufacturing, textiles, pharmaceuticals, and IT.The meeting took place as both nations, now partners in the expanded BRICS grouping, continue to advocate for a stronger voice for the Global South in multilateral platforms. India has been instrumental in supporting Ethiopia’s membership and is committed to accelerating cooperation under the India-Africa Forum Summit framework, ensuring the partnership remains people-focused, future-ready, and centered on mutual progress.
