Pakistan Seeks BRICS Membership, Says Finance Minister

Date:

Pakistan is seeking membership in the BRICS economic bloc, the country’s Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb announced during the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in Washington. Aurangzeb confirmed that Pakistan was pursuing membership in the influential group that includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

During the interview with, Sputnik, Aurangzeb asked pointedly if the country wanted to join BRICS. He answered, “Yes, we are.” This confirmation comes as Pakistan sees the strategic advantage of aligning with BRICS, an organization that wields great economic and geopolitical influence.

Earlier this year, Mushahid Hussain Sayed, chairman of the Pakistani Senate Defense Committee, was more optimistic about membership and called for the pending application by Pakistan to be reviewed as quickly as possible. He underlined that with Pakistan, BRICS would gain greater strength and diversity and emphasized a need for BRICS’ international presence expansion.

Next year’s BRICS Summit to be held in Russia is going to be a grand event. Quoting Russian Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov, it is going to be the most important foreign policy event for Russia during the year, with 32 countries having already assured participation in it.

Why Pakistan’s Entry into BRICS Matters

A potential membership of Pakistan in BRICS will create a turnaround for the country in economic and diplomatic activities on the global platform. In this respect, BRICS membership opens frontiers for Pakistan in trade, investment, and mutual interaction with some of the most fast-emerging economies of the world. It may also be viewed as further diversification of BRICS and its strength in global economic affairs.

This move falls in line with the general framework of Pakistan’s broader economic and foreign policy objectives, as the country strives for growth by encouraging foreign investment and expanding partnerships beyond its traditional Western alliances.

As BRICS continues in its effort to widen its scope of influence on the global platform, its membership of Pakistan into the bloc could open it up for deeper cooperation of emerging economies in changing the global economic landscape.
