The Open University of Kenya (OUK), located in the heart of Konza Technopolis, marked a historic milestone with its inaugural graduation ceremony. Launched in August 2023 by President William Ruto, OUK stands as the region’s first fully digital university, providing a transformative platform for higher education.
A Groundbreaking Event for Digital Learning
One year after its inception, OUK celebrated the achievements of 78 graduates. Among them, 57 earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Leadership and Accountability from the School of Business and Economics, while 21 received qualifications in Learning Design and Technology from the School of Education.
Presiding over the ceremony, Julius Migos Ogambo, Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Education, emphasized OUK’s alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 4, advocating for equitable and sustainable access to education. “OUK was formed to eliminate barriers of distance, cost, and time, opening higher education to all, regardless of location, socio-economic status, or nationality,” he noted.
OUK: Transforming Education through Inclusivity
With the theme “Integrating Knowledge and Information to Transform Society,” the event showcased OUK’s commitment to accessible, affordable, and inclusive education. Since its launch, OUK has attracted over 3,000 students from 18 countries, pursuing 15 diverse programs, including undergraduate degrees and postgraduate diplomas.
James Mwangi, OUK’s Chancellor and Group CEO of Equity Bank Group, highlighted the institution’s transformative vision: “OUK is breaking barriers, providing inclusive and flexible higher education that transcends physical borders, fulfilling the dreams of students in remote villages and across the globe.”
A Catalyst for Kenya’s Digital Transformation
As one of three higher education institutions at Konza Technopolis, also known as Silicon Savannah, OUK is at the forefront of Kenya’s digital economy. Alongside the Kenya Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (Ke-AIST) and the upcoming Riara University, OUK plays a pivotal role in driving technological and economic advancements.
John Paul Okwiri, CEO of Konza Technopolis, praised OUK’s contributions: “By leveraging digital education, OUK is helping to realize Kenya’s Vision 2030 of transforming into an industrialized, middle-income nation.”
