Nigerian Onome Ebi prepares for her Sixth World Cup, Challenging Age Stereotypes

Date:

Nigeria’s Onome Ebi, the captain of the national women’s team, is defying age limits as she gears up for her sixth Women’s World Cup at the age of 40. Despite facing criticism, Ebi remains determined to prove herself on the field.

Veteran with Unwavering Passion

Onome Ebi has dedicated two decades to the sport of soccer and has been a key player in five of Nigeria’s nine World Cup campaigns. In 2019, she made history as the first African player to participate in five World Cups, showcasing her enduring love for the game.

While some doubt Ebi’s ability to perform at this stage of her career, she brushes off the negativity. She refuses to let her age hinder her passion, stating, “I love this sport more than anything…”

Strength through Challenges

To maintain her physical prowess, Ebi trains alongside the men’s team at Levante Las Planas, the club she joined last year. Competing against male players helps her build stamina, a vital attribute for her role as a defender.

Ebi acknowledges that some people may not appreciate a 40-year-old woman excelling in football, but their comments only fuel her determination. Instead of letting criticism affect her, she channels it into her drive for excellence. She confidently states, “I’m proud of who I am; I’ve got a vast amount of experience, and I’m putting it to good use.”

Aiming for Success

In the upcoming World Cup held in Australia and New Zealand, Ebi will lead Nigeria’s national team, known as the ‘Super Falcons.’ Their goal is to surpass their previous performance and reach the tournament’s semi-finals for the first time. With a blend of seasoned players and talented youngsters, Ebi believes it is achievable.

As Ebi looks forward to her sixth World Cup, she radiates confidence and readiness. She states, “I’m ready for a sixth World Cup, and we’re ready as a team.” Nigeria’s captain is determined to seize the opportunity and demonstrate to the world that they are a force to be reckoned with.

Nigeria, representing Africa, finds itself in a Group B alongside co-hosts Australia, Canada, and Ireland. The tournament will take place from July 20 to August 20. Despite the tough competition, Ebi remains optimistic about their chances. She believes the team has what it takes to exceed their performance from the 2019 World Cup in France and aims to reach the semi-finals.
With her unwavering passion, experience, and a team ready to make their mark, Onome Ebi is set to inspire football fans worldwide.
