French Actor Gerard Depardieu to Auction his Art Collection

French actor Gerard Depardieu has made the decision to sell a large part of his art collection. The collection, estimated to be worth between 3-5 million euros, will be auctioned off at the Hotel Drouot in Paris on September 26-27.

Renowned Actor and His Art Collection

Gerard Depardieu, a well-known French actor famous for his roles in films such as “Cyrano de Bergerac” and “Obelix,” has long been an avid art collector. His collection primarily consists of abstract contemporary art and statues.

Actor’s Decision to Lighten the Load

The decision to sell the art collection came without specific reasons given by Depardieu himself, according to the auctioneer, David Nordmann. However, Nordmann mentioned that Depardieu  is 74 years old. The actor, who has lived a fulfilling life, feels the need to lighten his load.

Unique Art Collection and Auction

The actor’s art collection is known for its unique display. Instead of hanging paintings on the wall, Depardieu piles them up against the wall and moves them as he pleases. The auction will feature around 250 works of art, including a striking Germaine Richier statue, valued between 500,000 and 800,000 euros. Other notable pieces include a Rodin statue and works by artists like Odilon Redon and Hans Hartung.

Auctioneers’ Perspective and Future Prospects

While organizing the sale, the auctioneers admitted their fascination with Depardieu’s wine cellar and expressed their interest in acquiring some items from his collection.
