Julie Tully’s Extraordinary Journey: From California Rancher to Diplomat’s Wife

Date:

A sudden blast shattered the tranquility as Julie Tully spoke to her mother, causing her and her son to freeze in their tracks. The unexpected disruption marked the beginning of a story that would captivate readers from the very first sentence.

Love and Adventure

How did the cowgirl end up in Cameroon, Djibouti and Nigeria, where a bomb robbed her of her peace so far from home? Julie Tully, a daughter of a California rancher, found herself drawn to a sailor from Long Island, an alumnus of the Naval Academy. Despite the prospect of a nomadic lifestyle, she couldn’t resist his kindness, intelligence, and humor. Leaping into the unknown, Julie embraced the opportunity to move to Cameroon when her husband proposed the idea. Although hesitant at first, she mustered the courage to embark on a new chapter in her life—a decision that would prove to be life-changing.

A Journey Across Continents

The Tullys’ journey commenced in England, where they resided for three years before relocating to Germany. In 2011, they moved to Cameroon, followed by subsequent assignments in Nigeria and Djibouti. Julie’s love for reading and her desire to understand each new environment fueled her curiosity. She chronicled her experiences through a blog, sharing stories about a cowgirl learning to live in the military.

From Blog to Book

Over time, Julie’s blog gained a substantial following, with more than 500 readers eager to immerse themselves in her storytelling. Encouraged by others, she began considering transforming her blog into a book. After returning to the United States, Julie collaborated with her agent to shape her writings into a memoir. The result was “Dispatches from the Cowgirl: Through the Looking Glass with a Navy Diplomat’s Wife.”

Embracing Dual Identities

Julie was balancing her ranching roots and her deep connection to Africa. Despite the contrasts, Julie viewed both places as home, cherishing the sense of belonging she experienced in each. Her journey from cowgirl to diplomat’s wife had enriched her perspective and taught her the value of embracing diverse cultures and experiences.

Julie Tully’s extraordinary story serves as a testament to the transformative power of love, adventure, and resilience. Through her writing, she invites readers to join her on an enthralling expedition across continents. “Dispatches from the Cowgirl” stands as a remarkable memoir that intertwines cultural exploration, and the enduring pursuit of finding a place to call home.

“I still dream of Africa most nights,” Julie wrote. “In those dreams, I am once again sitting on our verandah in Cameroon, watching an afternoon thunderstorm roll through. Or I am shopping at the grocery store in Nigeria. Or I am attending another reception in Djibouti. Then the morning comes, and I wake up to our new life. And I miss it every day.”
