Ivory Coast’s Coach Jean-Louis Gasset Amid AFCON Drama

Date:

In a surprising turn of events, the Ivory Coast national football team’s coach, Jean-Louis Gasset, has been relieved of his duties despite the team still having a glimmer of hope for advancing in the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Ivory Coast Football Federation (FIF) announced on Wednesday the termination of Gasset’s contract, citing insufficient results in alignment with the agreed-upon objectives.

“The Ivorian Football Federation expresses its regret for the progress of the Elephants during the group stage of AFCON 2023,” FIF said in a statement. “However, it remains convinced of the potential of our football team, and calls on everyone to unite for all the challenges ahead.”

The FIF, expressing dissatisfaction with the team’s performance under Gasset’s leadership, has appointed former Ivory Coast midfielder Emerse Faé as the interim coach.

This unexpected decision comes as Ivory Coast failed to secure automatic qualification to the knockout stage after suffering a 4-0 defeat against Equatorial Guinea in their final group game.

Following the disappointing loss, Gasset acknowledged the challenges faced by the team, describing the match as a “catastrophic scenario” and highlighting the difficulty in overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds.

The defeat against Equatorial Guinea marked Ivory Coast’s heaviest-ever home loss in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Gasset, who took over as the head coach in 2022, faced immense pressure after succeeding compatriot Patrice Beaumelle.

His tenure was marked by ups and downs, with the team failing to qualify for the World Cup during his reign. The decision to part ways with Gasset comes as a response to the perceived shortcomings in achieving the set objectives.

The shocking defeat on Monday led to a display of frustration from Ivorian fans, resulting in the vandalism of commuter buses outside the stadium.

The emotional reaction underscores the passion and expectations associated with the national team and the sport in the country.

With just three points from three group games, Ivory Coast finds itself relying on results from other groups to secure a spot among the best four third-place finishers for a chance in the last 16.

As the Africa Cup of Nations progresses, all eyes will be on interim coach Emerse Faé and the Ivory Coast team as they navigate through a crucial phase in the tournament.
