Iran’s fishery sector continues to thrive, with exports of fishery products showing significant growth.
According to Hossein Hosseini, the Head of the Iran Fishery Organization (IFO), fishery exports increased by 44% in weight and 28% in value during the past seven months.
This surge reflects the country’s growing presence in the global seafood market, Tasnim News Agency reported.
Hosseini highlighted that Iran’s fishery production is on track to reach an impressive 1,459,700 tons by the end of the current Iranian calendar year.
Iran has solidified its position as a leader in fishing, ranking second among the 32 countries operating in the Indian Ocean and holding the top spot in the western part of the region.
The country’s fishery industry also supports a large workforce, with 144,000 fishermen currently employed in the sector.
Additionally, 117,000 people are involved in aquaculture, with 18,000 directly engaged in the farming of fish, shrimp, and algae.
Back in April, Ghobad Mokarami, Head of IFO’s Shrimp and Marine Aquatic Affairs, projected that Iran’s fishery production would double within the next two years, signalling a bright future for the sector.
In the last Iranian calendar year, Iran’s fishery exports exceeded $310 million, a 3% increase from the previous year, according to the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA).
This growth underscores the country’s expanding fishery industry, which plays a crucial role in its economy.
