Indian Institute of Technology to open its first overseas campus in Zanzibar in October

Date:

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) is set to open its first-ever overseas campus in Tanzania’s Zanzibar in October 2023, signaling a significant milestone in global education. With a batch of 50 undergraduate students and 20 master’s students, the new campus, known as IIT Madras at Zanzibar, aims to provide high-quality education in data science and artificial intelligence.

Underlining India’s growing interest in the African continent and its commitment to promoting education, the establishment of IIT in Tanzania reflects a positive step towards strengthening ties between the two regions. This initiative highlights India’s dedication to fostering research and innovation in Africa, which is vital for driving economic growth and development.

Operating under the auspices of Madras, IIT intends to offer Zanzibar the same international recognition and benefits enjoyed by its counterpart in India. Leveraging the extensive network of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) signed by IIT Madras with businesses and institutions worldwide, the Zanzibar campus will extend these opportunities to its students. This includes access to internships at top global companies, ensuring a holistic and enriching educational experience.

Ensuring Quality Education

Maintaining the institution’s high standards is a top priority for IIT in Tanzania. To address concerns about candidate quality, IIT has designed a three-fold solution. The admissions process will comprise an entrance exam, a one-month preparation program, and individual interviews.

Recognizing the challenges of replicating the full IIT experience without the established infrastructure and systems available in India, IIT plans to approach this transition gradually. Initially, instructors from India will teach at the Zanzibar campus. However, the long-term objective is to develop a group of locally trained instructors who can carry forward the institution’s legacy. To achieve this, India has offered 50 scholarships for Tanzanian students to pursue Master’s and PhD programs at various IITs in India. This initiative aims to nurture a pool of talented individuals who will eventually become the future faculty of IIT in Zanzibar.

Anticipated Growth and Future Plans

IIT’s presence in Tanzania not only benefits the local community but also serves as a catalyst for research and innovation in Africa. The establishment of the permanent campus in Zanzibar, which is expected to be completed within the next three to five years, will further contribute to the growth and development of education in the region.

In overall, by extending international recognition and providing a quality education, IIT aims to empower students in Zanzibar and promote research and innovation across the African continent.
