India Inaugurates Tata-Airbus Facility to Boost Aircraft Manufacturing and Exports

Date:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a major Tata-Airbus manufacturing facility in Vadodara, Gujarat, on Monday, signalling a new era for India’s aviation industry.

Designed to produce C-295 transport aircraft for the Indian Air Force, this facility marks a significant leap in India’s aspirations to become a global aircraft exporter and leader in civil aviation production.

Speaking at the inauguration, attended by Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, Modi emphasized that the Tata-Airbus project aligns with India’s “Make in India, Make for the World” initiative, advancing the country’s industrial self-reliance.

Paying tribute to late industrialist Ratan Tata, Modi noted, “This facility is a testament to India’s evolving work culture… We’ve laid the groundwork to scale new heights in aviation, moving from dependency on imports to self-sufficiency and innovation.”

Construction on the facility began in October 2022 and is now poised for full-scale production.

The Tata-Airbus plant is expected to significantly bolster India’s supply chain, sourcing around 18,000 aircraft parts domestically from various regions across the country and providing new opportunities for small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

The plant will also offer a surge in employment, with thousands of new jobs anticipated.

“Our focus is on skills and job creation. This factory will pave the way for a robust ecosystem in aviation manufacturing and support increased air connectivity in smaller towns,” Modi said.

He compared it to his tenure as Gujarat’s Chief Minister when a manufacturing unit of the Canadian-German rail giant Bombardier was established in Vadodara.

Today, that facility exports metro coaches globally. Modi predicted the Tata-Airbus facility would similarly catalyze Vadodara’s development into a hub for transport engineering, aviation, and heavy machinery.

After the inauguration, a roadshow featured cultural performances from various Indian states, with the two prime ministers greeting crowds along a 2.5-kilometre route to the Tata-Airbus site.

Later, at the historic Lakshmi Villas Palace, they held bilateral talks, covering issues ranging from digital transformation to scientific collaboration.

Prime Minister Sanchez praised Modi’s efforts, saying, “TASL (Tata Advanced Systems Ltd.) reflects India’s commitment to becoming a global industrial powerhouse.”

Sanchez further emphasized Spain’s open-door policy for Indian investment and expressed pride that the first India-made C-295 aircraft will be ready to fly in 2026, showcasing the strength of the Spanish aeronautical sector.

He added that Spain and India share ambitions in the green and digital sectors and are expanding people-to-people connections, as seen in Spain’s recent decision to open a consulate in Bengaluru and India’s new consulate in Barcelona.

The discussions marked a milestone for India-Spain relations, with both leaders lauding the establishment of the “Spain-India Year for Culture, Tourism, and Artificial Intelligence” in 2026.

Sanchez remarked, “India plays a crucial role in the Indo-Pacific, and Spain, with strong ties in Europe, Latin America, and Africa, offers an extended reach for our partnership to flourish.”

As India moves forward with its defense and aviation manufacturing ambitions, the Tata-Airbus facility promises to propel India’s footprint in the aerospace industry, creating both a local and global impact.
