India: Electric Car Sales Share Beats the US Every Month Since April, Ember Data Shows

Date:

India News: India’s electric car sales share has been higher than that of the United States in every month since April 2026, according to Ember’s global EV tracker published in October. India still sells fewer electric cars in absolute numbers, but the trend shows how fast its home-grown EV market has moved this year.

Key facts

  • Ember says India’s battery-electric (BEV) share of new car sales has topped the US figure each month since April 2026.
  • The US BEV share was 6% for January–August 2026; 49 of the 56 countries Ember tracks scored higher.
  • India’s VAHAN registration data put EVs at 5.8% of new car sales in April 2026, up from 3.7% a year earlier.
  • Indian electric car sales passed 100,000 units in the first half of 2026, up more than 90%, the IEA reports.
  • Tata Motors and Mahindra account for over 60% of India’s EV sales.

What does Ember’s tracker show?

The think tank’s monthly data covers 56 markets that make up more than 90% of global electric car sales. Globally, BEVs reached 18% of new car sales in January–August 2026, up from 16% a year earlier, while plug-in hybrid sales fell 12% and combustion cars 6%. Outside China and the US, BEV sales grew by an estimated 45%.

India is one of 15 countries that overtook the US on this measure in 2026. Brazil and Malaysia, both in the BRICS family, are on the same list. Ember was careful with its wording, though. The data “does not establish that India sells more electric cars in absolute terms”, it noted.

That caveat matters. In April, India registered about 23,500 electric cars against roughly 70,000 in the US, Business Today reported from VAHAN figures. Share is a measure of direction, not size.

Who builds India’s electric cars?

Mostly Indian companies. Tata Motors and Mahindra held more than 60% of EV sales in the first half of 2026. Chinese brands are growing from a small base. Japanese makers, strong in petrol cars, are almost absent from the segment.

Demand also had an external push. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles said its EV orders “surged 20-25%” after the West Asia war lifted fuel prices this spring. Ember estimates that EV fleets in oil-importing countries displaced about 200 million barrels of oil between March and August 2026, worth around $20 billion.

Indicator India United States
EV share of new car sales, April 2026 5.8% (VAHAN, all EVs) 5.1% (BEV only)
Electric cars sold, April 2026 ~23,500 ~70,000
BEV share, Jan–Aug 2026 Above US every month since April 6%

Why the India electric car sales story is a BRICS story

About 84% of the BRICS+ population lives in net oil-importing economies, according to an IISD analysis cited by Deccan Herald in September. For those countries, every electric car, scooter and three-wheeler cuts the import bill. India’s 2026 BRICS presidency has pushed affordable electric transport, with two-wheelers, three-wheelers and buses at the front.

Our reading: the share figure is a real milestone, and the more important number is the price. Indian EVs are being built by Indian firms for Indian incomes. That model, rather than premium imports, is the one most emerging markets can copy. Read our earlier report on the IMF’s October outlook for BRICS economies and more from our India section.
