Heavy Rain and Cyclone Montha Threat Trigger School Closures Across South India

Several districts across South India, particularly in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Coastal Andhra Pradesh, are experiencing widespread school and college closures due to continuous heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. This weather activity is fueled by a combination of an active Northeast Monsoon and the presence of a developing weather system in the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to intensify into Cyclone Montha by Monday, October 27. 

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for several coastal and delta districts, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall (12–20 cm) and the high likelihood of localized flooding, waterlogging, and landslides in vulnerable areas. The closures are a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students and staff, as intense rain has already been recorded in parts of the region. The IMD has urged parents and students to monitor safety advisories closely, with fishing communities already advised to avoid deep-sea operations until the system passes.
