Ghana’s Korle Bu Hospital gets advanced Cath Lab

Date:

The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Ghana has expressed gratitude to the Bank of Ghana and Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for their support in acquiring and installing a new Catherization Laboratory, which is expected to enhance the hospital’s capabilities to provide advanced medical care. The $1m lab, which is the most advanced of its kind in the country, includes a Big Detector, dyna CT, roadmap software and 3D workstation, which are essential for accurate and effective minimally invasive treatments.

Advanced medical facilities to enhance patient care

The acquisition of the lab is expected to significantly reduce the incidence of patients being referred abroad for further tests and treatments. Ghana is currently the only country in the West Africa subregion offering advanced minimally invasive endovascular treatments for cases such as brain aneurysms. By investing in such advanced medical facilities, Ghana can also attract and retain skilled medical professionals, improve the training of local doctors, and enhance the quality of care provided to patients.

Gratitude for support and advocacy

At the commissioning of the lab in Accra on April 25, the Chief Executive Officer of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr Opoku Ware Ampomah, expressed gratitude to the Bank of Ghana for sponsoring the full cost of the Catherization Lab, calling it a significant investment that will enhance the hospital’s capabilities to provide life-saving interventions. He also thanked Dr Bawumia for his advocacy and personal interest in the project, recalling the instrumental role played by the Vice President in engaging the Governor of the Bank of Ghana and ensuring that the lab was acquired as part of the Bank’s Social Responsibility obligations. In his remarks, Dr Bawumia challenged hospitals and other medical facilities across the country to partner with the private sector to provide and maintain essential equipment to improve patient care.
