Ethiopia Reaffirms Commitment to Peace and Security at UNSC Meeting in Addis Ababa 🇪🇹

Date:

Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos met with members of the UN Security Council (UNSC) in Addis Ababa, where the two councils were holding their 19th Annual Informal Joint Seminar with the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) from October 13 to 17, 2025. Minister Gedion used the high-level dialogue to reaffirm Ethiopia’s strong commitment to both regional and global peace and security, emphasizing the crucial role of enhanced international cooperation in addressing conflict situations across Africa and the world.

The discussion centered on ensuring complementarity and effective coordination between the UNSC and the AUPSC, the two bodies responsible for maintaining global and continental stability. The Council members specifically acknowledged Ethiopia’s long-standing contributions to peace efforts in the region. The meeting is part of a tradition that sees the councils meet annually, rotating between New York and the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, highlighting Ethiopia’s central diplomatic role on the continent.

The significance of the gathering was heightened by the turbulent security landscape in Africa, with the joint seminar likely addressing pressing issues such as the situations in Sudan, South Sudan, the Sahel, and the Great Lakes region (including the Democratic Republic of Congo). The Ethiopian government stressed the importance of diplomacy and dialogue, positioning itself as a proactive partner in ensuring stability across the Horn of Africa and the broader continent.
