Celebrating Inclusion: Serengeti Breweries Limited’s Impact on Empowering Persons with Disabilities

Date:

Every year on December 3rd, the world observes the International Day of People with Disabilities, a global event that underscores the importance of inclusion, advocacy, and understanding for people with disabilities. This year’s theme, “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future,” calls for action to empower individuals to shape a more equitable society.

Serengeti Breweries Limited (SBL) is leading the charge in Tanzania, turning this vision into a reality through innovative programs and partnerships that uplift persons with disabilities.

Fostering Inclusive Leadership Through Agribusiness

One of SBL’s most notable initiatives in 2024 is its agribusiness program, which has trained 100 individuals with disabilities in modern farming techniques. This program not only enhances participants’ livelihoods but also strengthens their roles as leaders in their communities.

“This program isn’t just about farming; it’s about unlocking potential and fostering leadership,” says John Wanyancha, SBL’s Corporate Relations Director. “By equipping people with disabilities with skills and opportunities, we empower them to take charge of their futures and contribute meaningfully to Tanzania’s development.”

The Impact of Partnerships

SBL collaborates with organizations like Sightsavers and the Syngenta Foundation East Africa to maximize its impact. In 2024, the establishment of a farmer hub in Singida supported over 200 sorghum farmers, including individuals with disabilities.

The hub offers high-quality seeds, fertilizers, and training through demonstration plots while serving as a symbol of hope and inclusion. It has also fostered gender equality and elevated the voices of persons with disabilities in agricultural value chains.

Changing Perceptions, Transforming Lives

Michael Salali, Executive Director of the Foundation for Disabilities Hope (FDH), commended SBL’s efforts:
“Programs like these are critical in transforming perceptions about people with disabilities. By offering training, resources, and platforms for leadership, SBL demonstrates that inclusion benefits everyone.”

Salali emphasized that collaboration among corporates, governments, and civil society is essential to driving sustainable impact.

Inclusion as a Practice

Through its initiatives, SBL exemplifies how inclusion can transform lives and strengthen communities. As we observe the International Day of People with Disabilities, SBL’s story inspires us to embrace diversity, amplify leadership, and ensure no one is left behind.

Together, we can create a future where everyone thrives—regardless of ability.
