‘Design Doha’ Debuts in Dubai During Dubai Design Week

Date:

DOHADesign Doha, Qatar Museums’ newly established biennial event dedicated to celebrating contemporary design from Qatar and the broader MENA region, has officially made its international debut in Dubai. This milestone event was marked by a private gathering at the Skooni Art Foundation & Residence, accompanied by a special activation titled the ‘Reading Lounge’ during Dubai Design Week 2024 at the Dubai Design District.

Arab Design Now Publication Unveiled
The highlight of Design Doha Comes to Dubai is the international launch of Arab Design Now, a groundbreaking publication released in September that surveys the rich landscape of design across the MENA region. The book, which spans 360 pages filled with vibrant illustrations, delves into diverse design disciplines including architecture, material innovation, contemporary crafts, fashion, graphic arts, and object design. Edited by curator Rana Beiruti, the publication aims to shine a light on local and regional talent, showcasing both traditional and cutting-edge design work.

Produced in collaboration with Silvana Editoriale, the book serves as a central element of Design Doha’s first edition. The presence of Design Doha in Dubai underscores the importance of the publication as a tool for fostering dialogue and shaping the future of design in the Arab world.

Strengthening Regional Design Collaborations
Fahad Al Obaidly, Acting Director of Design Doha, emphasized the significance of launching the book during one of the region’s most influential creative festivals. “This event is a pivotal moment for us, as it allows us to highlight Arab Design Now and spark deeper conversations about design in the MENA region,” said Al Obaidly. The initiative aligns with Design Doha’s mission to strengthen collaborations and introduce its vision to the wider design community in the region.

Engaging the Creative Community
Held on the eve of Dubai Design Week, the exclusive event brought together leaders and innovators from the design sector. The evening included a presentation by Al Obaidly, followed by a panel discussion titled Living the Dream: Arab Design Now, moderated by Glenn Adamson, Artistic Director of Design Doha. The discussion featured prominent voices in Arab design, such as Nada Debs, celebrated for her distinctive craftsmanship, Omar Al Gurg of Modu Method, and the Abudail sisters from Studio Naqsh, who are known for their innovative design concepts.

The panel explored evolving narratives in contemporary Arab design, offering insights into how regional design can continue to innovate while staying rooted in cultural traditions. The event also provided a valuable networking opportunity for attendees, fostering connections that will drive the future growth of Design Doha.

A Hub for Design Exploration at Dubai Design Week
Running through November 10, Design Doha’s ‘Reading Lounge’ activation in the Dubai Design District invites visitors to immerse themselves in contemporary Arab design. The space offers an interactive experience centered around the themes of the Arab Design Now publication. Additionally, the Art Jameel Pop-Up Bookshop will make the book available for purchase, allowing design enthusiasts to take home a piece of the region’s design heritage.

By participating in Dubai Design Week, Design Doha aims to build stronger ties with Dubai’s vibrant creative community, fostering a spirit of collaboration among designers across the MENA region. This initiative is a step toward cultivating a shared culture of innovation and artistic exchange, paving the way for future design collaborations that span national and cultural boundaries.
