Transport for London (TfL) has launched an action plan to increase the use of cargo bikes in the city aiming to reduce pollution and congestion, and promote safer, greener and healthier freight. The initiative will involve collaboration with local boroughs, businesses, and the freight industry to revolutionize the delivery and servicing sector, and promote the growth of cargo bikes as a cleaner and safer alternative to traditional vans and heavy goods vehicles (HGVs).
Cargo bikes could replace up to 4% of van journeys in London by 2030, with central London experiencing the highest growth, replacing up to 17% of van journeys. This could reduce carbon emissions by up to 30,000 tonnes of CO2 per year by 2030. Cargo bikes also present lower risks to pedestrians and cyclists than vans and HGVs, and they could help to make London’s streets more attractive and safer for public transport, cycling, and walking.
Safety standards and guidance for cargo bike riders and operators
The action plan involves developing a London safety standard for cargo bikes, based on best practices, to ensure the safe use of cargo bikes on London’s streets.
Christina Calderato, TfL’s Director of Strategy and Policy, said that freight and servicing are crucial to London’s economy, and the use of cargo bikes can play a vital role in cutting carbon emissions, air pollution, and road danger, she said.
Promoting a greener, healthier and sustainable future for London
Will Norman, Walking and Cycling Commissioner, said that cargo bikes can be game changers when it comes to delivering freight and servicing trips. The action plan will help to build a better, safer, greener London for everyone, he said.
Rob King, co-founder and CEO of Zedify, said that cargo bikes can save over 90% of CO2 emissions per km compared to electric vehicles, and they have a vital role to play in decarbonizing UK transport. He added that cargo bike logistics has hit a vital stage of growth, but it’s still a young sector that needs investment in ecosystem development, product development, as well as finance and insurance options.
