Africa could seek deeper ties with BRICS nations to benefit from technological and economic expertise, according to a leading pan-African organization.
Roll Stephane Ngomat, head of the African Peace and Security Union, emphasized the benefits of closer collaboration with the BRICS countries—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—during the ASIAEXPO 2024 agri-food expo in Russia.
He highlighted the potential for the entire continent to leverage BRICS members’ innovation and technological advancements.
“We already have several African countries like South Africa, Ethiopia, and Egypt involved in BRICS. We aim to expand this partnership to encompass the entire continent, allowing Africa to fully benefit from BRICS countries’ expertise, technology, and innovative approaches,” Ngomat stated.
The African Peace and Security Union sees this as an opportunity for cooperation at multiple levels—government-to-government, public-to-private, and business-to-business.
Ngomat stressed that any collaboration should be mutually beneficial for both Africa and BRICS nations.
The Peace and Security Council, the pan-African body behind the proposal, is dedicated to promoting regional peace, security, and stability, while also supporting the continent’s integration and development.
It also seeks to engage African civil society in these efforts.
The potential partnership comes as Africa increasingly looks for ways to bolster economic growth, improve technological capabilities, and strengthen diplomatic ties with emerging global powers.
