Organic Pig Fattening: A Profitable Venture for Large Farms in Switzerland

Date:

A recent Agroscope study has revealed that organic fattening-pig production in Switzerland can be profitable, particularly for larger farms. The research, part of the BioPerform project co-funded by Bio Suisse, analyzed the economic situation of organic meat production, focusing on technical efficiency, production costs, and profitability.

The Swiss Organic Meat Market
Pork remains Switzerland’s most popular meat, with consumption averaging 20 kg per person in 2023. Despite this, organic pork accounts for just 3.5% of the market, translating to roughly 47,000 organic fattening pigs sold annually.

The study highlights the financial landscape for organic pig production, providing insights into cost structures, working hours, and productivity.

Key Findings on Profitability
The analysis found that direct costs—particularly livestock purchase and feed—play a crucial role in profitability. Efficient and cost-effective feeding strategies are essential for economic success in organic pig farming.

Larger farms demonstrate higher labor efficiency and cost-effectiveness. While organic production costs are nearly twice as high as conventional systems, higher prices for organic meat (CHF 7.77/kg carcass weight compared to CHF 3.79/kg for quality-label pork) compensate for these expenses.

Of the ten farms analyzed, six were able to operate profitably, with larger operations showing greater cost-efficiency and better labor utilization.

The Road Ahead for Organic Pig Fattening
This study underscores the potential for organic pig production to thrive in Switzerland, especially for large-scale operations. As consumer demand for organic products grows, efficient cost management and scaling up operations will be key for farms looking to maximize profitability in this niche market.
