Egypt-Italy Ro-Ro Cargo Line Set to Revolutionize Trade

The Egyptian Ministry of Transport officially launched the Egypt-Italy roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) cargo line today, marking a significant milestone in regional trade and logistics. This new maritime corridor connects Damietta Port in Egypt with Trieste Port in Italy, aiming to enhance Egypt’s role as a regional transportation and logistics hub.

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly will preside over the inaugural ceremony, including the symbolic raising of the Egyptian flag on the Wadi El Arish vessel, operated by the National Navigation Company (NNC).

Aims and Goals of the Ro-Ro Line

The Ro-Ro cargo line offers a faster, more efficient method for transporting goods between Egypt and Italy. With a transit time of just 36 hours, it’s designed to:

  • Enhance Regional Trade: Establish a green corridor to facilitate the export of Egyptian agricultural products to Italy and Europe.
  • Boost the Egyptian Economy: Open new markets for agricultural exports, create job opportunities and attract global demand for Egyptian goods.
  • Streamline Operations: Organized truck movement minimizes port delays, ensuring product quality and safety.

Why Italy?

Italy is a key market for Egyptian exports, especially fresh agricultural goods. Serving as Europe’s gateway to Africa, Egyptian ports also provide Italy with access to African and Gulf markets.

To ensure the project’s sustainability, the Egyptian government has:

  • Reduced port fees by 88%.
  • It lowered transit fees on Egyptian roads for trucks, from $300–$350 to $100.
  • Implemented a reciprocity principle to facilitate smoother trade relations.

Egypt-Italy Ro-Ro Line

  1. Faster Delivery of Perishables: Refrigerated trucks and containers ensure swift and safe transportation of goods.
  2. Job Creation: The maritime and logistics sectors will see new employment opportunities.
  3. Cost Efficiency: Transportation costs between the two countries are significantly reduced compared to air or land transport.
  4. Economic Cooperation: Strengthens bilateral trade, industry, and investment relations.
  5. Increased Exports: Encourages greater demand for Egyptian agricultural products in Italy and Europe.
  6. Regional Integration: Links European, Asian, and African markets through Egyptian territories.

Future Prospects

The Ro-Ro line aligns with Egypt’s broader vision to improve its transportation infrastructure. Plans include:

  • Developing a logistics area near Damietta Port.
  • Boosting the economic feasibility of high-speed train projects.
  • Encouraging Italian investors to establish production facilities in Egypt.

This initiative not only strengthens Egypt’s trade network but also bolsters its position as a critical node in international logistics.
