Ukrainian wine industry has prospects for entering new markets

Date:

Ukraine’s wine industry has made significant strides in 2022. A press conference with several key players in attendance, with the participation of the Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, Markiyan Dmytrasevych, highlighted the industry’s achievements and prospects,

Return to OIE brings access to international technologies

One of the most significant accomplishments of the industry in 2022 was its return to the International Organization of Viticulture and Winemaking. This renewal of membership will provide Ukrainian winemakers with access to international databases and modern technologies and enable them to create a competitive domestic product and open new markets. The Deputy Minister emphasized that this is crucial in the context of European integration and Ukraine’s need to recognize world standards and raise internal standards in line with EU standards.

Government grants continue

Despite the Ukrainian wine industry has suffered significantly due to the war, with some companies ceasing operations and some located in temporarily occupied territories, recovery is possible with significant resources, time, and modern regulation. The Ministry of Agrarian Policy has prepared a draft law on grapes and viticulture products that meets EU legislation requirements. Furthermore, in 2023, the government grant program will continue to operate, providing opportunities to receive grants for the establishment of vineyards.

The International Organization of Viticulture and Winemaking (OIE) is an intergovernmental organization of a scientific and technical nature that deals with grapevines, wine, wine drinks, table grapes, raisins, and other grape-based products. Ukraine has become the 49th state party to the OIE. The organization aims to protect the interests of the wine industry, create favorable market conditions, harmonize and comply with analysis methods, and combat fraud and unfair competition in the market.

The Ukrainian wine industry’s achievements in 2022 appear to bode well. Its return to the OIE will undoubtedly provide opportunities for growth and innovation, while government grants and modern regulation will help the industry continue to evolve.
