The much-anticipated World Friendship Games, originally scheduled to take place in Moscow and Yekaterinburg from September 15 to 19, 2024, have been postponed indefinitely by a decree from Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Reasons Behind the Postponement
The decree, issued to safeguard athletes’ rights to participate freely in international sports events, specifies that the games will be rescheduled upon further instructions from the Russian President.
The decision follows international calls for a boycott, including opposition from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Both organizations raised concerns about the political implications of hosting the games and compliance with anti-doping regulations.
New Initiatives to Support Russian Sports
In addition to postponing the games, President Putin has instructed the government to introduce legal measures for channeling gambling industry profits into a sports development fund. This initiative aims to:
- Enhance youth and mass sports programs.
- Provide support to sports schools and federations.
- Develop infrastructure for future sports events.
The fund will also extend support to the Olympic and Paralympic Committees of Russia and facilitate the organization of new competitions.
Russia’s Response to International Allegations
Despite allegations from the IOC and WADA, Russia has strongly denied any political motivations behind the games. Russian authorities have urged global organizations to reevaluate the event’s purpose, emphasizing its aim to foster unity through sports.
The postponement reflects a challenging period for international sports diplomacy and underscores the complexities surrounding global sporting events amid geopolitical tensions.
