Saurabh Gadgil, Chairman and Managing Director of PNG Jewellers, has become the latest member of India’s elite billionaires’ club following an impressive 61% rise in the company’s share value.
According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Gadgil’s net worth has skyrocketed to over $1.1 billion, thanks to the successful IPO of PNG Jewellers, which was offered in Mumbai this past September.
Gadgil, a sixth-generation jeweller, has played a pivotal role in transforming his family’s 192-year-old jewellery business into a modern corporate entity.
Since joining the business in 1998, Gadgil has expanded the company’s operations and restructured it from a family-owned partnership to a professionally managed private company in 2012.
His vision and leadership have pushed the company to new heights, making it one of India’s top jewellery brands.
Gadgil’s family members are also deeply involved in the business. His wife, Radhika Gadgil, brother-in-law Amit Vaidya, and cousin Parag Gadgil, all hold key positions in the company’s management.
Together, the four family members earned a combined remuneration of 272.4 million rupees ($3.2 million) in the 2023-24 fiscal year, representing a significant portion of employee costs.
Saurabh Gadgil himself earned 223.7 million rupees in compensation, with a portion paid by PNG’s U.S. subsidiary. Additionally, Gadgil is the only executive entitled to receive a sales commission of 2% of the company’s annual profits.
Reflecting on his journey in an interview with Bloomberg, Gadgil shared, “This habit of mine started coming in handy particularly back in 1998 — when I took over the reins of the PNG Jewellers family business. This was but the start of a journey into something unimaginably vast. Something that no amount of words can ever fully capture.”
Under Gadgil’s leadership, PNG Jewellers has diversified its offerings and expanded its brand presence across India. The company now operates 48 stores, mostly concentrated in Maharashtra, where it has enlisted Bollywood celebrities like Madhuri Dixit, Raveena Tandon, and Salman Khan as brand ambassadors.
In addition to expanding its retail footprint, the company has ventured into online shopping and introduced pay-later options to attract a broader customer base.
Founded in 1832 by Ganesh Narayan Gadgil, who began selling gold ornaments in Sangli, Maharashtra, PNG Jewellers has grown from humble beginnings to become a major player in the Indian jewellery market.
Today, the company continues to evolve under Saurabh Gadgil’s leadership, maintaining its legacy while embracing modern business strategies to stay competitive in the global market.
