University of Buea Celebrates 32nd Matriculation Ceremony, Gifts 524 Laptops to Deserving Students

Date:

The University of Buea marked its 32nd matriculation ceremony on Saturday, November 23, 2024, at the Herbert Ngando Endeley Amphitheatre. Over 9,000 undergraduate and 1,000 postgraduate students from 94 departments were officially inducted into the institution. As part of the ceremony, 524 laptops were awarded to deserving students on academic merit. These laptops, donated by President Paul Biya, underscore the university’s commitment to rewarding academic excellence.

Empowering Students Through Inclusivity and Responsibility
The keynote speaker, Mr. Behyia Leonard, a 1993 alumnus, addressed the gathering under the theme “Building a Community of Respect, Diversity, and Inclusivity.” He emphasized the importance of personal responsibility, urging students to achieve success based on merit rather than external connections. Leonard highlighted the value of mutual respect between students and lecturers, reminding attendees of the significance of the matriculation oath in fostering academic integrity.

University’s Vision for Entrepreneurship and Innovation
Vice Chancellor Prof. Ngomo Horace Manga described the ceremony as an initiation into academic life, calling on students to uphold university regulations and take their studies seriously. He reiterated the dual investment by parents and the government in their education, urging students to seize the opportunity with dedication.

The Vice Chancellor also announced the introduction of new courses designed to promote entrepreneurship. This move aligns with a 2023 law aimed at equipping students with skills to meet the demands of the modern economy. Additionally, in a nod to cost-effectiveness and inclusivity, students donned robes instead of traditional black suits, reflecting a shift toward Anglo-Saxon university traditions.

A Step Toward Academic Excellence
The University of Buea’s 32nd matriculation ceremony was not just a celebration of new beginnings but also a testament to its commitment to fostering excellence, inclusivity, and innovation. By equipping students with tools like laptops and introducing courses tailored to entrepreneurship, the university continues to position itself as a hub of learning and development in Cameroon.
