Ukrainian Film ‘La Palisade’ Wins Top Prize at Vilnius Festival

Ukrainian film “La Palisade” has been awarded the top prize at the Vilnius International Film Festival. The feature debut of director Philip Sotnychenko won the best film in competition and received a cash prize of 8000 euros. The film is a post-Soviet noir detective story which tells about the investigation of the murder of a policeman in the 1990s, which takes place on the eve of the abolition of the death penalty.

Award-winning Debut Film

“La Palisade” had its world premiere at the Rotterdam International Film Festival where it won the FIPRESCI award. The film’s storyline revolves around a forensic psychiatrist who helps to investigate the murder of a policeman. However, as he observes the illegalities of conducting forensic experiments on a suspect, he begins to doubt the correctness of the law enforcement system. The law enforcement officers leave no stone unturned to find the culprit and punish them fairly.

The Vilnius International Film Festival

The Vilnius International Film Festival is the largest film festival in Lithuania in terms of the number of films and audience. This year’s festival ran from March 16 to 26, and it showcased various documentaries and short films along with feature films. One of the documentaries shown was the collective documentary “Letters to Ukraine” created by Lithuanian filmmakers.

Aside from “La Palisade,” another film that received recognition at the festival was the Lithuanian film “Mariupol 2” directed by Mantas Kvadervicius and Anna Bilobrova. The film depicted the impact of armed conflict on civilians and was filmed in Mariupol, a city under fire from the Russians. Kvadervicius was killed by Russian soldiers, and the footage was rescued and edited by Bilobrova, his fiancée.


The Vilnius International Film Festival is a significant cultural event that celebrates the art of cinema. “La Palisade” and the other films showcased at the festival, highlight the challenges and complexities that people experience in their lives.
