Ukraine wins four medals at the 58th European Karate Championship

The Ukrainian national team has won three gold and one silver medal at the 58th European Karate Championship in Guadalajara, Spain, securing third place in the overall standings. The competition brought together 549 athletes from 47 countries, with Ukraine represented by 22 athletes.

Ukrainian Men’s Team Won Gold Medal in Team Kumite Competition

The men’s team won the gold medal in the team kumite competition. Stanislav Goruna, Valeriy Chebotar, Rizvan Talibov, Andriy Zaplitnyi, Andriy Toroshanko, Valeriy Sonnykh, and Kostyantyn Tsymbal defeated the French team 3-2 in the final. This marks Ukraine’s fifth medal in men’s team kumite at the European Championships, with the previous four being bronze.

Terliuga and Zaplitnyi Crowned Continental Champions, Seryogina Takes Silver

Anzhelika Terliuga secured her third continental championship title in the kumite under 55 kg category, defeating Italian Veronica Brunori 8-0 in the final. Terliuga has now won a total of eight European awards. Andriy Zaplitnyi won the first individual award for Ukraine at the European Championships, taking home the gold medal in the kumite up to 75 kg category. In the final, he defeated Turkey’s Erman Eltemur, the 2022 European champion, 2-0. Anita Seryogina also showed a good result, earning a silver medal in the up to 61 kg category after losing to Germany’s Rim Hamis in the final (1-2). This marks Seryogina’s fourth silver medal and ninth medal in the European Championships in individual kumite.

Overall, Ukraine’s national team and coaching staff are being commended for their successful performance at the 58th European Karate Championship. The historic victory in the men’s team kumite competition and the impressive performances by Terliuga, Zaplitnyi, and Seryogina highlight Ukraine’s growing presence in the sport of karate.
