UAE Accelerates Food Security Strategy with Vertical Farming and 50% Food Waste Reduction Target

Date:

The UAE is aggressively strengthening its position as a global leader in food security through innovation-driven policies and sustainable agriculture. A key pillar of its strategy, supported by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, is the ambitious goal to reduce food waste by 50% by 2030. This commitment is being executed through national initiatives like the “Ne’ma” program, which focuses on encouraging efficient food consumption and managing food surplus by leveraging organizations like the UAE Food Bank.

The nation is also investing massively in transforming its domestic food production capacity, a strategic necessity given its arid climate and reliance on imports. This involves pioneering and expanding vertical farming capacity across Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Examples include the world’s largest indoor hydroponic farm, Bustanica, which minimizes water use by over 90%. Furthermore, Abu Dhabi recently launched a pioneering regulatory framework to accelerate the adoption of novel foods and advanced agri-tech solutions, such as alternative proteins and precision fermentation. These comprehensive, technology-led efforts underscore the UAE’s long-term National Food Security Strategy 2051, which aims to position the country as the world’s best in the Global Food Security Index. By fostering innovation, attracting private capital, and promoting sustainable supply chains, the UAE is creating a resilient food ecosystem that addresses both national security and global sustainability goals.
